Born Alive

First off, I will say I know this is a very controversial subject and I don't mean to state my opinion or make anyone feel that they should state their view on abortion. I know we discussed a lot in class about abortion and adoption, so I tried to find something that we had discussed. I found this youtube video:

Here is an article relating to the same topic (note, some of the language may be offensive and biased-I apologize in advance)Obama born alive bill opposition
I want to bring it to attention because this is something I was completely unaware of. I didn't know that some abortions failed that far along in the pregnancy and babies were being born alive. Did you know about this issue? What message do you think Obama was sending when he refused to sign the bill four times in a row? How do you think Illinois or other states can take precautions so that this doesn't happen or so that if it does, the infants live? How do you think we can stop doctors (like the on in the article) from infanticide? Obama also says that he wants abortion to be safe and "rare" however based on the statistics, we know that it is not rare. What can we do to make it a less often occurrence and keep "born alive" babies safe?

  1. That article is truly eye opening and disgusting in my opinion. I didn’t realize that abortions were legal that late in the pregnancy. That doesn’t sit well with me. I will say that I would never choose abortion for myself, but I do think that that is every woman’s choice to make. However, I do not think it’s ethical to take a pair of scissors to an infant’s spine. I would be upset if they were doing this to puppies! If we are going to keep abortion around in this country, then it needs to be regulated more and done earlier on in the pregnancy to the point where there is absolutely no possibility of the fetus surviving. In my opinion, if the doctor screws up and the infant is kicking once it comes out, then they have a duty to protect it. It’s now another one of their patients; take the infant to get medical attention and then start the adoption process. I’m not saying that if this happens the mother has to put up with the doctors mistakes for the rest of her life, no. She attempted to do what she saw best for the child, but things just didn’t play out exactly as planned. How is failed abortion explained by the honor code that doctors have to sign? I don’t understand…

I’m not asking you to agree with my feelings, I’m just stating them. No hard feelings.

  2. the video you shared is indeed disturbing but it is important to remember that is not standard abortion practice, but rather a decision made by one doctor that is being used as propaganda for pro-life activists. There are many different types of abortions that vary by how far along the fetus is the method of the procedure. Doctors sometimes only perform abortions up to a certain trimester due to their own personal ethical feelings while others may value abortion at any stage in pregnancy as legal. Planned parenthood is one that stops abortions fairly early, yet they re often targeted for performing abortions that make it seem like they are ripping out a full term baby from the womb.
I think Obama was sending the message when he refused to sign the bill that if we label this killing, because that is what the doctor essentialy did, not an abortion, as a law mandated part of an abortion practice, then we are labeling legal abortion as the killing of a child as well. Since Obama at the time (he voted in 02, this is not as recent) believed in pro-choice, this contradicted his view on abortion, so he decided to speak out against it. I personally think it was a brave stance. I am uncomfortable with people labeling these acts as part of the abortion practice because essentially they are not. To keep "born alive" babies safe, I think lawmakers need to punish all those involved and aware of the killings as murderers and accomplices to send the message that these are brutal thought out murders, not abortions, and should be treated as such.
